HANDS-ON WORKSHOP:   MAKING TWITTER WORK FOR YOU

When a jetliner landed in the Hudson River in January,  editors at Associated Press scanned Twitter.com for messages or “tweets”  from cellphones near the plane.  They also found a photo of the downed plane.  21-year-old Janis Krums fed it from his I-phone.   He beat out pros by many minutes.  The image of the plane floating as passengers walked on its wings was adopted by AP and other news agencies.   Now, it's the one many of us remember when we think of the crash.

That’s just one way journalists are harnessing Twitter’s power to bridge citizens and journalists.   Twitter news feeds from print, tv ,radio, and web organizations are another.

Please join  Mark Briggs, social media expert and author of the book Journalism 2.0, for a special hands-on intro to Twitter created especially for the Los Angeles Press Club.  He’ll show how  journalists and news organizations can  use Twitter to shape a  new kind of storytelling.  He’ll also have tips for how they can mine the ever-growing universe of tweets for breaking stories and sources.  And he’ll talk about best practices,  journalists can use to be sure the info they get is reliable.

Bring your laptops and cellphones and come ready to roll up your sleeves.  If you’re not using Twitter yet, you’re especially welcome.    Enrollment is limited.
